Morinville Legion celebrates a century of service with community open house

The smell of hamburgers on the barbecue, conversations between old friends and a century-old
legacy brought residents through the doors of Morinville Legion Branch 176 on July 17 as the
community gathered to celebrate the Royal Canadian Legion’s 100th anniversary.
The open house welcomed members, veterans and the public for an evening of food, fellowship
and reflection on the organization’s long history of service. Throughout the night, visitors toured
the branch, met with Legion members and learned more about the role the Legion continues to
play in the community.
Volunteers kept busy serving hamburgers and hot dogs while guests enjoyed refreshments and
conversation inside the hall. A special anniversary cake marked the Legion’s centennial, giving
attendees another opportunity to recognize the milestone.
Although the Royal Canadian Legion is celebrating 100 years nationally in 2026, the Morinville
branch has its own history to celebrate. Branch 176 has served the community for 80 years,
supporting veterans and their families while also becoming a gathering place for remembrance
ceremonies, fundraisers and local events.
For many residents, the evening was simply a chance to spend time with neighbours, reconnect
with familiar faces and show support for an organization that has remained an important part of
Morinville for generations. The relaxed atmosphere reflected the community spirit the Legion
has worked to foster throughout its history.
As the evening came to a close, organizers thanked everyone who attended and the volunteers
whose dedication helped make the celebration a success.
While anniversaries offer an opportunity to reflect on the past, the open house also served as a
reminder that the Legion’s work continues. One hundred years after the organization was
founded, branches like Morinville’s remain places where veterans are honoured, community
connections are strengthened and traditions are carried forward for future generations.
