Students from Morinville Community High School earned top results at this year’s Skills Alberta
Provincial Competition, held May 6 and 7 at the Edmonton Expo Centre. A total of 11 students
represented the school in a variety of skilled trades and technology categories, competing against
approximately 700 students from across Alberta. Competitors included Travis Plamondon, Travis
Spargo and Renze Wierengads in Cabinet Making; Teodora Markovic in Culinary Arts; Shayne
Demchuk, Zoe Kustra and Paige Miedema in Graphic Design; Rafferty Myles in IT Network
Systems Administration; Owen Svensrud in Joinery; and Elizabeth Nelson and Weston
Stevenson in Video Production.
MCHS added two more medals to its growing total of 41 medals since the school first began
competing in 1999. Shayne Demchuk received the Safety Award in Graphic Design, while Paige
Miedema earned a silver medal in Graphic Design. Travis Plamondon captured gold in Cabinet
Making and will now represent Team Alberta at the Skills Canada National Competition in
Toronto from May 27 to 30. School officials also extended thanks to Skills coaches Greg
Boutestein, Kyle Coxen, Daniel Pietraszewski, Louise Sansano and Marc Swerda for their
continued dedication and support of student competitors.
