The Bon Accord and Gibbons Food Bank has seen demand for assistance more than double over the
past two years, as rising food costs put pressure on local households.
The food bank previously averaged eight to 10 hampers per week. It now provides 24 to 28 weekly,
with demand reaching as high as 30 in some weeks.
As the holiday season approaches, the organization is encouraging residents, local businesses and
community groups to help support individuals and families in need.
The food bank’s most-needed items include pasta, pasta sauce, peanut butter, jam, soups, crackers,
Kraft Dinner, granola bars and canned meat.
Financial contributions are also welcome. They help the food bank purchase food in bulk and support
its work throughout the year.
“Financial support is great as we can buy bulk and make the dollars go further. We buy food all year
long!” said a representative of the Bon Accord and Gibbons Food Bank.
While the need for assistance has grown, donations have declined as people face higher grocery bills
themselves.
“With the high cost of food our donations have dropped as people can’t afford to donate, so any help
is appreciated!” the representative said.
The food bank is also accepting applications for its 2026 Christmas hampers. Applicants must live
within the food bank’s service area, and completed applications must be submitted by November 30.
Forms are available by emailing bonacccordgibbonsfoodbank@gmail.com or picking up a paper copy
at the Gibbons Family Resource Centre.
Food donations can be dropped off at the Family Resource Centre at 5016 50 Street in Gibbons. The
centre is open Monday to Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., with extended hours until
6 p.m. on Thursdays.
Financial contributions can be made by e-transfer or through the food bank’s website at
bonaccordgibbonsfoodbank.ca.
The food bank also serves Namao, Legal and Sturgeon County. Donations of food or money can help
it continue assisting people across the region.
