Local artists submit tiles to Canadian mural

By Brandie Majeau
The Canada Mosaic Mural project was initiated in 2015 to commemorate
Canada’s 150th anniversary. Its goal is to create a national mural that includes
contributions from all provinces and territories, consisting of 150 individual murals and
hundreds of thousands of paintings, forming a gigantic mural mosaic over 365 meters
wide and 2.5 meters high. The project aims to reflect Canada’s cultural and
geographical diversity, serving as a historical time capsule and inspiring future
generations. Each community will participate by producing their own mural, which will
contribute to the overall mosaic and remain as a legacy in their respective locations.
Local Redwater artists have embarked on a journey to be a part of these unique
projects and have submitted their tiles to be a part of a national mural mosaic. Jeannie
Hare, Terri Hannah, Ophelia McKenna, and Ian Morris from the Redwater Art Society
have all submitted tiles the Global Roots Project (Nature’s Dream) and anxiously await
as the Active Grid Tiles for the project are constantly placed and moved as the mural
takes form.
At present, the Canada Connects Nature’s DREAM Mural Mosaic is an exciting
project in development, with submission deadlines approaching on January 31, 2025.
This masterpiece is being meticulously crafted by the talented artist Lewis Lavoie, who
employs a unique method of arranging tiles according to their shape and color within
each section he is working on. This approach means that tiles may not be placed in the
sequence they are received, reflecting the creative process’s dynamic nature.
The production of the mural is anticipated to span several months, culminating in
a grand unveiling set for Autumn 2025. Participants who are eagerly awaiting the
incorporation of their tiles are encouraged to check back periodically for updates, as the
tile arrangement is part of a SEARCH & FIND process. It is important to note that tiles
can shift locations multiple times as the mural takes shape.
Lewis Lavoie collaborates closely with a technical support person to bring this
magnificent mosaic to life. As the production phase concludes, a dedicated support
team will reach out to all participants, providing a final opportunity for review when the
complete list of contributors and corresponding tile numbers is posted on the grid page.
Overall, the extensive journey from the project&’s launch to its grand unveiling spans
approximately 12 to 18 months.
