On Saturday, August 6, the Royal Canadian Legion in Gibbons celebrated its 75th anniversary with the community. The celebration took place in the evening that included a catered dinner and a show for all guests in the legion building at 5027 50 Street.
Brian Phelan, chair of the committee and legion members, Val and Darren Longstaff, Linda Zacharias, and master of ceremonies Louise Bauderi spent weeks planning the event. Darren Longstaff said, “the legion is all about helping our veterans and their families in times of need. We support all the veterans in our community and surrounding area and are glad we have been doing it for 75 years.”
The Mayor of Bon Accord, Brian Holden; Gibbons Council Member, Amber Harris; MLA Dale Nally; and Deputy District Commander, Ron Coley, all attended the legion’s celebration. A buffet-style catered dinner was offered to all who purchased tickets. Guests shared a delicious meal and enjoyed a live show from Voices of Legends, and listened to the sounds of the piper that had put on quite the performance. Attendees were fascinated by the presentations held by Phelan and the historical display set up; many items dated back to 1947.
Longstaff said, “75 years of helping the veterans and their families, we wouldn’t have been able to do it without the support and help from our fantastic community! It is nice to enjoy laughs, stories, and great food with our town’s amazing people.”
