The Sturgeon Public Schools Board of Trustees Announces New Superintendent Effective September 1, 2022

The Sturgeon Public Schools Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that Shawna Walter has been selected as the new Superintendent of Schools effective September 1, 2022.

Shawna Walter has been the Acting Superintendent since November 2021. Previous to this role, Shawna held the positions of Associate Superintendent, Director, Principal and Vice Principal and began her journey with Sturgeon Public Schools as a teacher in 2007.

Shawna is a respected system leader who is known for being a collaborative problem solver and someone who fosters and models a culture of professionalism in every interaction. She is dedicated to lifelong learning and fostering a culture of high achievement while also demonstrating empathy and a sense of humour. She is passionate about equity and inclusion and fostering learning environments where all students gain the skills, they need to be successful.

Shawna began her teaching career in 1992. She has served as a teacher in four different school divisions before finding her “home” with Sturgeon Public Schools. Shawna was born and raised in southern Alberta, just east of Calgary. She grew up in a rural school division and is proud to have spent her entire career in rural settings. She holds Arts and Education degrees from the University of Lethbridge, and a Master’s Degree from the University of Alberta.

The Board of Trustees looks forward to continuing to work with Ms. Walter in strengthening our stakeholder relations and enhancing programming for our students.
